What Is Take-Home Pay?

For example, if you earn $65,000 per year as a single filer in Texas (no state income tax), your approximate take-home pay is around $52,000 after federal taxes and FICA โ about 80% of your gross salary. In California with its 13.3% top rate, you'd keep less.
Step 1: Start With Your Gross Salary
Your gross salary is the total amount your employer pays you before any deductions. This is the number on your offer letter or annual compensation. If you're paid hourly, multiply your hourly rate by hours per week, then by 52 weeks. For example, $25/hour ร 40 hours ร 52 weeks = $52,000 gross annual salary.
Step 2: Subtract Pre-Tax Deductions
